National Monument (Monas)

A Symbol of Indonesia’s Independence

The National Monument, or Monas, is an iconic landmark in Jakarta, Indonesia, standing as a symbol of the country’s struggle for independence. Located in the heart of the capital, Monas is a towering obelisk that reaches a height of 132 meters, making it one of the tallest structures in Indonesia. It was inaugurated in 1975 and designed by architect Frederich Silaban to commemorate Indonesia’s independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945.

At the top of the monument is a golden flame-shaped sculpture, which represents the spirit of independence and the nation’s aspirations for progress. Visitors can take an elevator or climb the stairs to the observation deck at the top, where they are treated to panoramic views of Jakarta’s sprawling cityscape.

The base of the monument houses a museum dedicated to Indonesia’s history and the independence movement. The museum showcases historical artifacts, dioramas, and exhibitions that chronicle the struggles and achievements of the nation’s founding fathers.

Monas is located in Merdeka Square, a large public park that often hosts national events, parades, and ceremonies. The monument is not only a symbol of pride for Indonesians but also a popular tourist destination. It offers a glimpse into the country’s past while celebrating its journey toward freedom and development.
